Injuries / Shin Splints

Shin splints are a common complaint, the term is used to describe shin pain along the inside or front edges of the shin. Shin splints are common among those involved in running sports.

  • Why do shin splints happen?

It generally occurs as a result of a sudden increase in the frequency, duration and intensity of activity. It is strongly linked to:

    • inappropriate footwear
    • foot posture
    • hard training surfaces
    • certain types of activity

Abnormal biomechanics is a major cause in the development of shin pain.  Flat feet, bowed legs and poor running technique all contribute to shin injuries. In order to determine the cause of your shin pain, our Podiatrists will conduct a full physical, walking and running assessment.

  • How can a podiatrist help me?

The Podiatrist will then be able to assist you with an ongoing maintenance program to prevent the shin pain from returning.
